Flower Gardens

‘Flower gardens’ are those gardens whose focus of attention is flowers. Cultivated for ornamental purposes, flower gardens are done up to offer a feeling of being in the midst of nature.

Evolution

The concept of ‘flower gardens’ came into existence with colourful eye-catching ‘weeds’, that seemed to be too good for pruning! Some farmers started to endure these weeds, as they found them pleasing enough, not to be removed but rather to be retained. And this gradually led to a sofisticated method of cultivating flowers, which brought about the concept of ‘flower gardens’.

Knot Gardens

Knot gardens are a kind of flower gardens, wherein flower plants are planted in such a way, so as to produce the pre-thought designs – mostly the square-frames. These square frames are composed of herbs only, which again are cut in shapes so as to look like green edges! Gardens with these hedges are also called ‘parterres’. The paths in-between, that are the results of two adjacent edges, are sometimes floored with gravel or concrete, and the square compartments these edges derive, are surfaced with a fine lawn. The number of square regions a Knot garden could occupy depends on the size of a garden, and varies in the range of one to ten.

Examples of herbs and shrubs used to design Knot gardens are: germander, marjoram, thyme, southernwood, lemon balm, hyssop, costmary, acanthus, mallow, chamomile, rosemary, calendulas, violas, santolina etc. etc.

The ever first Knot gardens were set in sovereignty of Queen Elizabeth I in UK.

Herb Gardens

Herb gardens are flower gardens of medicinal and cooking plants. Some of the flowers serve as both – a flower and a fruit – since they don’t just delight ones’ senses, but are edible as well. Some others are edible, when baked or roasted. During the middle ages, nuns and monks were known to have divine medical knowledge and used to make the best use of plants for healing purposes. While ‘aloevera’ is known for alleviating acnes or any kind of other dermatities, the others contributing herbs are: rosemary, parsley, sage, marjoram, thyme, mint, rue, angelica, bay, basil. etc.

Be attentive to…

Elegant flower gardens require more than just watering and pruning!

Before sowing seeds or planting flower gardens, the height, colour, fragrance etc. of prospective flowers they are about to produce, should be kept in mind. You shouldn’t end up planting two shrubs, each growing the flowers of the same colour, beside each other. Due attention to sowing the seeds on well-worked spacing, is important too. This is because flower-harvest is often seasonal. They bloom at varying periods of time, some in winter, some in spring, while some are evergreen. A pre-planned ‘flower-seed-mix’ can help, wherein seeds of different flowers are mixed together in a balanced way, to create a flower-bed that blooms well in all the various seasons.

At the heart of flower gardens, is the art of planting the seeds in such a way, so as to keep your garden looking beautiful throughout the year.
